Zoran Zekic: “The Cup match is very important for us”
How did the team live through not becoming the champions?
I can say that we must analyze the season but at first we should concentrate on the Cup. I congratulate FC Milsami on the championship.
How important is the Cup for FC Sheriff taking into account that the team did not win the championship? Will it influence the result of the upcoming match for your future in the club?
Even if we won the championship, the Cup would still be important for us. But in this situation the upcoming game is even more important for us. I think about me in the last turn. FC Sheriff is not Zoran Zekic, this is the team. The most important is that the team wins the Cup of Moldova. We will see what is going to happen next.
Taking into account the fact that FC Sheriff did not win FC Dacia this season, who is the favorite of the Cup of Moldova?
The Cup final is one game in which everything is possible. Three days ago Dinamo Zagreb was a favorite in the game for the Cup of Croatia but they won only in a penalty shootout. There is no favorite on Sunday, everything will be determined on the pitch.
Are all players in good health and are they ready to take the field on Sunday?
All players are healthy. It is good that no one got injured in the last match of the championship which took place on the artificial turf with 30 degrees Celsius on the street. Yesterday it was only warm-up. Today we will know for sure whether everyone is ready to take the field.
Why couldn’t you speed up at the finish of the championship and achieve everything the whole club wanted?
I have my own opinion about it but I will not sound it. Of course, we must not have lost to FC Milsami. We spent that game very poorly. When you know that you don’t have a chance for a mistake, it is very hard. But I am satisfied that the team fought up to the end and worked at the training sessions.
Despite the intrigue in the championship, there is an impression that it is not that the level of football grew in the country but FC Sheriff lowered its level. What do you think?
This is football. It is good that there are such teams as FC Milsami and FC Dacia. It would be great if there are a few more of such teams next year, then the championship will be more interesting. There should be conditions for the teams to play on natural grass. There is a number of good football pitches in Moldova. The European cups will show the level of our football when all representatives of Moldova start their performance there.
The UEFA Europa League starts soon. How far can FC Sheriff go in this tournament?
It is a difficult question. Now we think about Moldova Cup final. The team comes back from vacation in the beginning of June, and the first Europa league game will start already in the beginning of July. I think FC Sheriff can go far in the Europa League.
Before the start of the previous season FC Sheriff got involved in an incredible transfer politics but some of the newcomers did not prove themselves. Is FC Sheriff getting ready for active strengthening as well or are you going to take Moldovan players into account?
I already have Moldovan players. The management builds the politics and strategy of the club. For example, Real Madrid bought Ronaldo and Bale but they did not become the champions. The quantity does not always mean quality. It is very difficult to build the team when there many new players in it. We have not talked about the future with the club’s management.
