Experienced Portuguese defender Jorge (Jojo) Lopes recently joined FC Sheriff. Jojo was trained at one of Europe's strongest academies, Benfica in Lisbon, has experience playing in Portugal's top division, and is also a player for the Cape Verde national team.
Before the start of training, we spoke with Jojo to find out the reasons for his transfer, his first impressions of the club, and his goals at our club.
— Jojo, welcome to Sheriff! Why did you accept the offer from our club?
— Thank you! I was looking for a new challenge to develop my career. When the offer from Sheriff came, I felt it was the right step to continue growing and winning trophies.
— What did you know about the team and the Moldovan championship before the transfer?
— I knew about Sheriff from their famous Champions League match against Real Madrid, which attracted worldwide attention. I didn't know much about the Moldovan league, but I'm interested in learning more about it.
— What are your first impressions of the club's infrastructure and conditions?
— I was impressed. Sheriff has excellent conditions, a high-level training center, and a rich history.
— Tell us how you got started in football.
— I started playing football very early, at my hometown club, Amadora. That's where I discovered my love for the sport and took my first steps as a footballer.
— What did training at the Benfica academy mean to you?
— It meant a lot to me because the Benfica academy is one of the best in the world. I had the opportunity to learn a lot, grow as a player, and get acquainted with high-level infrastructure. Benfica played a fundamental role in my development.
— What position do you feel most comfortable playing in?
— My main position is right back, but I am ready to play in any position where I can be useful to the team.
— How would you describe your playing style to the fans?
— I am an attacking player: I like to join in attacks, make assists, and never give up in any game. I always give my all on the pitch.
— Are there any players you look up to?
— Cristiano Ronaldo has always been my main inspiration. His dedication and mentality are an example for any footballer.
— How did you feel about your debut for the national team?
— It was a huge honor and privilege for me to wear my country's jersey. I felt immense pride representing Cape Verde.
— Do you have a goal to secure your place in the national team and participate in major tournaments?
— Yes, of course! I dream of playing for Cape Verde in the World Cup and bringing glory to my country.
— How important are the European Cup games with Sheriff for you?
— They are very important. Playing in the European Cup is every footballer's dream, and the opportunity to play in the Champions League or Europa League with Sheriff will be an amazing experience.
— Do you have any football traditions or rituals before a game?
— Yes, I always pray before every game. It gives me peace of mind and confidence.
— What do you like to do outside of football?
— In my free time, I like to be with my family. They are the ones who help me recharge my batteries.
— What match do you dream of playing in the future?
— My dream is to play in the World Cup and the Champions League.
— If it weren't for soccer, what would you be doing?
— I would definitely be doing something related to sports because sports have always been a part of my life.
— What does fan support mean to you?
— Fan support means everything to me! They are the foundation of the club, our twelfth player on the field. Without a doubt, it changes the atmosphere and helps the team.
