Why couldn’t you talk him into coming to Moldova? (about Cristian Tudor)
He promised a lot he would come. I talked to his sister and parents and explained that we will meet him. Perhaps, they did not want to let him go away so far.
Do you feel sorry that you did not come to him by yourself?
I am sorry that I could not insist on his coming here. And I am also sorry that I did not come there by myself.
You had a chance to work with Kuchuk in FC Sheriff. Tell us about him.
He is a nerd, he likes to make everything one hundred precise. Household, arrivals, training process – everything was very strict. If someone was late, he got a penalty and did not take part in the match. It does not say that he is a despot. No, a normal person with his own psychology. Only such people become successful. Discipline is on the first place because you cannot have a result without it. Unfortunately, we are not Europeans and they cannot trust us to one hundred per cent. We should be driven all the time.
Don’t you feel shameful that players cannot play without discipline?
Of course, I do. It’s a childish thing. There are obligations according to the contract which must be fulfilled. It cannot be in a way that people work hard at the training camps, training sessions and then they wimp it out in one night. And I will never believe that footballers are forced to play football. We do have pleasure from that.
People say that Kuchuk almost made Lokomotiv players walk in a lineup.
When he trained FC Sheriff, there was no such insanity. I don’t know how it really happened in Lokomotiv. His methods are great for the players from former Soviet Union countries. And in Lokomotiv there are players who had experience in Europe and it is difficult for them to get used to these methods.
You finished your career in 32 years old in FC Sheriff. Why?
I am grateful to Victor Gushan and the club who took me after that injury. But why should I lie to myself and people around? I was known as a player who can score and speed up. I played in a match and then I recovered my knee for three-four days. If it was an amateur team I could play for three-four years. And FC Sheriff is a team with highest tasks, and I could not correspond to those loads. I talked to the management and said that I decided to terminate the contract in order not to lie to anyone.
At the end of your career you even played for FC Sheriff in the goal.
Yes, I did. We played with FC Nistru. There were 15 minutes left. One goalkeeper was injured, another one was double booked. The coach releases a player in the goal. I said: “Why? Let him catch the balls”. He asked: “Have you played before?” I said I played as a kid. Unfortunately, it was not a shut-out. So I had everything by the end of my career: forward, goalkeeper, and defender at young age.
