Today marks the 15th anniversary of FC Sheriff's debut in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. On September 17, 2009 the team coached by Leonid Kuchuk made a breakthrough, becoming the first Moldovan team to make it to the group stage.

The match with Romanian FC Steaua (now FCSB) took place at the Gencha stadium with empty stands. FC “Sheriff” lineup: St.Namashko, Da Costa, V. Volkov (A. Diedu 64, A. Suvorov 90), A. Verbetsky (V. Bulat 81), V. Tarhnishvili, A. Erokhin, B. Balima, F. Ruamba, Rodriguez, R. Tsynya, A. Kuchuk.

The game ended in a 0-0 draw, and at the end of the group tournament FC “Sheriff” took 3rd place with 5 points.
