Club History
The Beginning: 1997
In summer 1996, the football team Tiras made its debut when it was chosen for participating in Division B of the National Championship of Moldova. Before the second leg, Sheriff Company became the general sponsor of the team. On 4 April 1997, the sports club of the same name was established and headed by Company President Victor Gushan. The team was entrusted with the task to enter the National Division of the Championship of Moldova. With this aim, Mr. Aleskerov, an experienced tutor and former master who had worked with clubs of Soviet football top league, was appointed as the head coach. As a result, Sheriff left other teams of Division A behind and entered the National Division of Moldova. Winner of Moldova Cup: Season 1998/1999: Winner of Moldova Cup Season 1999/2000: Silver Medals Runners-up On 11 July 1998, Sheriff team debuted in the National Division at the Tiraspol Stadium. 27 May 1999 a day that went down in history of FC Sheriff as a golden date: the final match for Moldova Cup between Constructorul and Sheriff. It was an incredibly dramatic and nerve-straining game between two worthy rivals. The regulation game ended in a 1-1 draw, and in overtime, in the 109th minute, the 'golden' goal was scored. It was the first time Sheriff won Moldova Cup. In the next season, Sheriff became the runners-up of the Moldovan Championship with silver medals. 'Golden double' – 2000/2001 Most experts were of the opinion that Sheriff would become the main opponent to the multiple Champion of Moldova – Zimbru from Chisinau. So it did.
Four matches prior to the end of the Championship, the fate of gold medals was being decided in the game between Zimbru and Sheriff. This match took place at the Zimbru FC pitch with final score 1-3. Sheriff became the leader. Tiraspol team won four last games, and on 12 June, at the Tiraspol Stadium, President of the Football Federation of Moldova Pavel Chebanu awarded the team with the Champion Cup and gold medals.
In the games for Moldova Cup, Sheriff reached the final where their opponent was Nistru. The decisive game for the Cup took place in Chisinau at the Republic Stadium on 23 May 2001. Game ended in a 0-0 draw. The penalty shoot-out should determine the Winner of the Cup. Four players from each team swept home into the opponents' goal and only the last shot was saved by Sheriff goalkeeper that brought the victory to his team. Thus, Sheriff made the 'golden double', winning all awards of the season. The second 'Golden double' - 2001/2002 The 11th Championship of Moldova Sheriff started on 4 August. The current Champion and Winner of Moldova Cup began the season without swinging. As a result, the team finished the first round on the top with an advantage of 9 points over Zimbru – the eightfold Champion of Moldova. Season 2002/2003 The most successful season for the Club on the international scene. After a good start in the Moldovan Сhampionship, it was time to try themselves at the traditional Commonwealth Cup competitions in Moscow. Guided by Gabi Pele Balint, Sheriff managed to achieve impressive results. Having won in their group, in play-off mathces our lads one by one beat 3-0 FBC Kaunas in quarterfinal, 1-0 Locomotiv Moscow in semi-final and 2-1 Sconto Riga in final. Christian Tudor became the top scorer of the tournament with his 9 goals. Moreover, Sheriff striker excelled both in semi-final and final where he scored in the 30th second of the match. The second round of the 11th Championship of Moldova started in spring 2002. With a high-level performance during the entire second round, Sheriff in advance, 6 legs before the end of the Championship, became the twice Champion of Moldova. Season 2003/2004 One more year in Moldova passed under the star of Sheriff. The first trophy was won in autumn, 2003. That was the first Super Cup match in the history of Moldavian football between the best teams – Sheriff and Zimbru. The match was played at the Main Arena of the Sports Complex Sheriff and brought a 2-0 victory to our team. The autumnal part in the championship was not entirely successful; however, Sheriff finished the first half at the standings's top. In winter, the change of the coach was for the Club's good. The team managed to reach the semifinal at the Commonwealth Cup competitions in Moscow, and regular, now the fourth Champion title was won three legs ahead of the tournament end. Sheriff could win the third trophy as well but failed to beat its old opponent – Zimbru from Chisinau – in the Moldova Cup final. On the whole, the tradition remained – Sheriff won two trophies per season. Season 2004/2005 Season 2004/2005 again passed under the dominance of Sheriff in Moldova Championship. The football year started with yet another, already a second victory of the team in the Moldova Super Cup. The only goal scored by Alberto Blanco in the second half of the match against Zimbru brough another trophy to the Club – 10th in a row. Leonid Kuchuk’s team could have finished the first part of the Championship with perfect results in the National Division – 14 wins in 14 matches.
However, in the away match against Dacia, the home team managed to win back during the extra time. The second part of the championship did not come so easy to our team. Nevertheless, Sheriff could breakaway from Nistru for 17 points. It was the first time our team won the championship with such confidence. The only tournament Sheriff did not won was the Commonwealth Cup in winter and the Moldova Cup. Razvan Cocis with his 12 goals managed to take the third place among top scorers and Nikolay Zhosan became the best player in making assists.
'Golden double' - 2005/2006 2005/2006 Season became the real gallop through the Moldavian fields for the Sheriff players. Our team never played all matches of Championship in National Division so confidently and smoothly yet. Right after the first leg, our team left the opponents behind and this gap was increasing with each leg. There were ten victorious matches in a row. They only needed several matches to set the League record. But the most important was the other: the lossless series lasted for 18 games. The only disappointment came from the neighbours. Sheriff lost against Tiligul-Tiras at the end of March, but the main game of the season was yet to come. The semifinal duel at the Moldovan Cup against Zimbru Chisinau proved again who got the upper hand. After a 2-1 home victory over their arch-rivals in the second-leg match, Leonid Kuchuk's side proved itself as the team of character. The pitch turned into a mess, with unjust sending Alexander Epureanu off the field in the end of the first half and hostile behaviour of supporters from Chisinau that left a mark on the game. But even those circumstances did not prevent Sheriff from reaching the final. The goal scored by Razvan Cocis three minutes before the end of extra time paved the way to the main Cup match where the eternal finalist of these competitions Nistru from Ataki was beaten 2-0. In that way, Sheriff virtually won the Super Cup too. According to the Championship Regulations, in case the same team won both the Championship and the Cup, the Super Cup of Moldova was not held.
Again that season Alexey Kuchuk brought glory both to the Club and himself by scoring 13 goals as the best striker, and the top scorer of the Moldovan Cup also became the player of our team – Samuel Yeboah who scored 10 goals. It was remarkable that in the list of the Cup best scorers the first 4 places were occupied by the Sheriff players only. On the second line - Razvan Cocis with his 7 goals (the third place in the Championship top scorers' list – 10 goals), on the third one – Serghei Alexeev with 5 goals, and Alexey Kuchuk and Oleg Gumenyuk with 4 goals each. Our team had the biggest score record – 57 goals and conceded the least – 11 goals. No matches were lost at home, only Zimbru Chisinau was managed to get points in an unimportant match which ended in a 0-0 draw. Out of 28 matches of the Championship, Sheriff did not concede in 19 matches (9 of which in a row) and had more victories than others with huge score record – 7points. In addition, our Club was one of the most correct clubs. No wonder that only Sheriff became the most visited and popular team of the season.
In the same season, Sheriff became the Champion of Moldova for the third time, having won the title several legs before the end of the Championship in the match against Zimbru (3-0) where 13,000 spectators were present that was unusual for Moldova championships.
Season 2006/2007
Leonid Koutchouks’ team was close to the third qualifying round of the Champions League, scoring the same amount of points within two matches as Spartak did. But the Red-Whites scored a goal as guests and moved forward.
This season ended with Sheriff as a champion, furthermore, Tiraspol team achieved a record of historical significance to the club, winning without a single match lost in the division. In 36 matches, the Yellow-Blacks scored 70 goals, missing only 6. At the end of the match, the difference between the leader - Sheriff - and the team ranked second - Zimbru - was 21 point. The results of the Championship showed that the top scorer was Alexei Koutchouk with his 17 goals.
Unfortunately, our rival Zimbru won a return match, and summarizing both matches, won during the semifinal of the Cup of Moldova, and became the winner. The match was between the winner of the Super Cup Champion and the holder of the Moldovan Cup, it took place on the main arena of SC Sheriff. Leonid Koutchouk's team won in a very tense game, with Alberto Tiago scoring on the 84th minute. This was the greatest event for the 10 year anniversary of the Club.
'Golden Double' – 2007/2008
Once again, Sheriff couldn’t become victorious over the second qualifying round of Champions League. Having no trouble winning Rangers in the first round, with a score of 5-0, the Yellow-Blacks lost to Turkish super club Beshiktash. In the Friendship Cup, Sheriff entered the quarterfinal in Saint-Petersburg, losing in penalties to Hazar-Lenkorani, Azerbaijan.
For the fourth time, Sheriff made a 'golden double', winning all the trophies in the Championship of Moldova. The champion title was won anticipatory, before several legs till the end of the Championship, the difference with the team ranked second was 19 points. The results showed that the best forward of the Yellow-Blacks was Igor Pikushak, who scored 14 goals.
In the finals of the Moldovan Cup, Sheriff played with Nistru, Atacks. And once again, the match was one by a single goal, scored by our defender, Ivan Testemecianu.
'Golden Double' – 2008/2009
The results of 2008 showed the best goalkeeper of FMF Moldova was Sheriff's Stanislav Namashko. In January 2009, FC Sheriff became the champion of CIS for the second time, winning the final match in the Frienly Champions Cup against the champion of Kazakhstan Aktobe. This achievement became a historical event of the Championship, because none of the teams (except Russian and Ukrainian) managed to win this trophy two times. The achievement of the players, the coach staff, and the club's administration received the award 'For hard work'.
In April 2009, Sheriff won the Championship of Moldova before the last four legs of the Championship ended, scoring the same amount of awards as Zimbru. For the last nine years Tiraspol team was the best in the Championship of Moldova.
In May 2009, Sheriff performed its sixth 'golden double', winning in one season both trophies in the League of Moldova – the Championship and the Cup. In the final match, Dacia was defeated by the goals of Benjamin Balima and Florent Rouamba.
Season 2009/2010
With the high rating of Sheriff among European teams, the team earned to start not from the first, but from the second qualifying tour of the most prestigious European Club Championship. The start in the Cup was very good, winning both matches with the champion of Finland – Inter, Turkey, with a score of 1-0 for both matches. The wining streak of Sheriff wasn’t stopped by Slavia, Prague. The players showed great professional characteristics and attitude, will to fight for the victory, and managed to earn the way to the play-off round of the Champions League.
In August 2009, SC Sheriff was visited by a super club from Athens – Greek Olimpiakos, in which membership play world famous footballers, the champions of Europe, and the former players of European grants – Real, Juventus, Deportivo. The translation of this match was watched more that in 80 countries of the world in Europe, USA, China, Brazil and Argentina. Greeks stopped Sheriff on their way in the group stage of the Champions League.
In September, Sheriff for the first time in Transnistrian football history made its way to Europa League, where we played with the best clubs from Turkey, Holland, Romania. The match Sheriff – Fenerbahche gathered full tribunes of SC Sheriff. For the first time the field of Transnistria was stepped on by the feet of worlds champions, in particular – one of the mast famous Brazilians in the world – Roberto Carlos. The team was brought by the former couch of the Germanys National Team Christof Daum.
In October 2009, an enormous event for Transnistrian football took place– when in the match of Europa League the team “Twente” lost with a score of 2:0, the team is the leader of Holland’s championship. Hollanders, under the guidance of their chief coach Steve McLaren couldn’t do anything to Tiraspols team. “Sheriff” had its chance to win the group stage, but the loss in Istanbul to “Fenerbahche” threw the team abort the championship.
The results of 2009 showed that “Sheriff” is the best team of the year – in the version of FMF, in the version of sporting journalists of Moldova and in the version of the Town Deputy Council of Transnistria. FMF called Stanislav Namashko the best goalkeeper of Moldova, Vazha Tarkhnishvili – the best defenseman, and Leonid Koutchouk – the best coach.
Season 2010/2011
As in the previous year, this year "Sheriff" began its season with the participation in Champions League, from the second round. Our opponent was "Dinamo" Tirana, Albania. We won our first home match with a score of 3:1, and lost the away match with a minimal loss score, that's why our team continued forward in the tournament.
In the third round "Sheriff" again played versus "Dinamo" - this time, from Zagreb. Our opponent was the favourite of the pair, but "wasps" proved that they can play against a strong opponent. Both matches ended with a score of 1:1. Furthermore, we were in the lead for a long time, thanks to Vladimir Volkovs goal. The decisive part of the match was the penalty series, where our Bulgarian goalkeeper, Vladislav Stoyanov saved our goal and gave us the ticket to the play-offs. Unfortunately, we didn't enter the group stage of Champions League - "Bazel" was too strong for us and won both matches. But nether the less, our performance brought Andrey Sasnitski's team the ability to perform on the group stage of Europa League.
Our opponents in the group stage were famous teams, like Kiivs "Dinamo", one of Hollands strongest clubs "AZ", and "Bate", from Belarus. Nether the less, even in such a strong group, we managed to earn 5 points. A real sansation was our two match fight versus "Dinamo". On the 30 of September our complex was full of supporters. But the goals of Aleksandr Erokhin and Jymmy Franca breached the defense of the opponent and earned our victory. Also our goalkeeper, Vladislav Stoyanov deserves a symbolic gift - his goal was secure and safe during both matches.
In the Championship of Moldova our club was not so lucky. We lost a lot of emotional and physical powers. Our teams main target was the National Division, because in Winter we were ranked only third. But then after the break, our team once again was on its place - on the first. But near the end of the season we made several mistakes, and were left with silver medals. Also we didn't manage to win the Cup - "Iskra-Stal" stole our last trophy in the semi-final, and evetually won the Cup.
Season 2011/2012
‘Sheriff’ marked its quindecennial with returning of golden medals in the Championship of Moldova in 2012. Thus, being under the guidance of Belorussian specialist Vitaly Rashkevich the yellow-blacks became the best team in the championship of Moldova in the 11th time. But the National Cupwas not taken by ‘Sheriff’. Our football players gave way to ‘CSKA-Rapid’ (Ghidighici) in a series of penalty shootout by the score 2:4. According to the results of the season BenjamenBalima was called the best striker who scored 18 goals. The second in this list was Alexander Pesic with 14 goals. Nevertheless, ‘Sheriff’ will start the next season 2012/2013 with the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League.
